About This Specimen

This is a multilayered paper chart showing the anatomy of the equine distal limb. Dorsal view and palmar view. The relationship between the common and lateral digital extensor tendons and their attachment to the bones is shown. The relation between the superficial and deep digital flexor tendons is shown. Other structures demonstrated like the inferior check ligament, the manica flexoria, the palmar annular ligament, proximal and distal annular ligaments, and the collateral cartilages. In addition, the sesamoidean ligaments are arranged in three different layers showing straight, oblique, and cruciate sesamoidean ligaments. The deepest layer shows the navicular bursa, navicular bone, other bony structures, and the joints of the distal limb. This layered chart is important for anyone who deals with equine to understand the topographical anatomy of the distal limb which is required to interpret imaging modalities such as radiography and ultrasonography. It helps owners and professionals to show the clients location of some pathological cases such as navicular disease.
